Kute: The Bitcoin App for Gen Z
Who's Kute?
Kute was founded by João Lobo. João had built bitcoin apps before, but he wanted holding and using bitcoin to feel familiar to a generation that has grown up with mobile banking, just without asking them to give up control of their money.
The result is Kute: a non-custodial money app for 18 to 30 year olds in Europe. It brings bitcoin, dollar balances, and access to prediction markets into one app with separate interfaces for everyday spending and cold storage.
The Challenge
Saving bitcoin, holding dollars, and making a payment can mean switching between wallets, exchanges, and networks. For someone new to actually controlling their own money, each switch adds friction, uncertainty, and a cognitive burden.
Kute's answer is one app for all. But a simple interface still needs reliable payments underneath. Running Lightning infrastructure, managing channels and maintaining liquidity would have overwhelmed the small, nimble team, and João wanted to focus on the product experience instead.
The Solution
Kute integrated the Breez SDK directly into the app, which makes everything possible in a single app without any switching back and forth. The SDK runs the payments engine between a user's spending, their savings and everything else Kute offers, but the user never sees it.
For users:
- Speed: Paying a friend or tipping a creator takes seconds in a single, simple interface.
- Convenience: Bitcoin and dollars sit in one app, with cross-chain swaps between supported assets and networks, and Sal, Kute's AI assistant, is always on hand to explain any screen or fee.
- Self-custody: Users can keep their money on their phones and manage their cold storage through the same app while retaining custody of everything.
Kute also offers access to prediction markets and trading through integrated third-party venues.
For developers:
The Breez SDK handles Kute's payments: sending and receiving bitcoin, Lightning addresses and zaps. Without a node to run, channels to open, and liquidity to manage, Kute's team is free to focus on how payments connect to the rest of the app: hardware-wallet savings, dollar balances, Polymarket and Hyperliquid integrations, cross-chain swaps and Sal, all in one Flutter app. Kute is open source under the GPL, and its code is public for anyone to inspect.
For growth:
Kute is live on Android, with iOS in TestFlight, and has joined the London bitcoin incubator Antidote. The next stops on their roadmap are easier funding, payments by link, and an IBAN and card through a licensed partner. Each one connects another everyday use of money to the same wallet.
