Coinsnap has been building bitcoin payment tools for merchants since 2023, from payment plugins for online stores and point-of-sale tools to a merchant dashboard. Its customers are businesses that want to accept bitcoin without handing their money to a middleman.

In 2026, Coinsnap launched its own non-custodial wallet on iOS and Android, mostly serving German-speaking countries, and Coinsnap is now rolling it out across Europe. The goal was a single app for both parties to a sale: the customer paying and the shop getting paid.

Most bitcoin wallets pick a side. Merchants get stuck with a point-of-sale app at the register, a separate setup for online orders, and a customer across the counter using something else entirely. Every extra app is another backup, another balance, and another place for a payment to go missing. Even with one app, the two sides want different things: a shop may take bitcoin because its customers ask for it without wanting its revenue to move with the bitcoin price.

Doing it non-custodially made it harder still to keep the money straight. Until recently, accepting bitcoin payments meant running a Lightning node, maintaining payment channels and inbound liquidity, or accepting hefty on-chain fees and delays. No bakery or bike shop will manage that kind of complexity. Nor should they have to. Coinsnap needed every user, merchant, and customer to get instant payments and keep their own keys without anyone needing to know or care about nodes.

Coinsnap integrated the Breez SDK directly into its wallet, which is just as useful to merchants as it is to customers. A single payment engine can now handle both sides of any retail transaction.

For users:

"With Coinsnap, the customer chooses how to pay and the merchant chooses how to settle. Breez SDK helps make that possible without merchants having to manage infrastructure themselves. A business can accept bitcoin and still receive USD if it wants protection from bitcoin's volatility."

Jens Leinert, Coinsnap

For developers:

The Breez SDK handles sending, receiving and setting up Lightning addresses for every wallet Coinsnap creates, whether merchant or customer, with keys on the user's own device. There is no node to run, no channels to open, and no liquidity to manage. Coinsnap's engineers can now spend their time on the merchant tools that set the product apart, such as checkout integrations, employee access and settlement options, while the payments that are the whole point simply work.

For growth:

Stablecoin settlement also widens the market. A shop can accept bitcoin without changing how it manages its money, which puts mainstream merchants in reach, not just bitcoin-native ones. The same download now serves a shop and its customers, so each retail transaction can unleash a virtuous circle of shoppers onboarding merchants and vice versa. With users across German-speaking Europe and a wider European rollout underway, Coinsnap is turning the checkout into its distribution.

When the customer and the cashier use the same wallet, paying in bitcoin transforms into a shared experience that's as easy as it is fast and functional.
